Curated Modern New Build

A Home Built for Art, Comfort, and Cats

When Fargo homeowners reached out about designing their third custom home, they had one request: to be listened to. After a couple of past experiences that felt more like transactions than collaboration, they were looking for a designer who would listen, get creative, and bring a little joy into the process.

They wanted a home that felt clean and modern, yes — but also warm, artful, and unmistakably them. With two cats, and a love for color and good conversation, the design needed to be anything but cookie-cutter. And with a tight lot and strict subdivision rules? Let’s just say this one kept me on my toes in the best way.

The homeowners were an absolute blast to work with — super design-savvy, and not afraid of color or unconventional ideas (my favorite kind of people). They’d been through the custom home process before, so they knew what worked, what didn’t, and how important it was to get the details right. Especially this time around.

Their wish list was clear: a space that felt light, modern, and uncluttered — but not sterile. They wanted moments of color, room to showcase their growing art collection, and thoughtful touches that made the home feel welcoming not just to guests, but to the two furry members of the family as well.

The site itself came with a few built-in challenges. It’s in a subdivision where every home has to look distinctly different from the others — no repetition allowed (which I was super excited about!). Combine that with a narrow lot and all the finished nearby homes, and it became a bit of a puzzle.

One of the biggest design challenges actually turned into one of the biggest wins. Early on, one of the homeowners mentioned wanting a big kitchen window — but they figured it would just face directly into the neighbor’s siding. Instead of settling, we reoriented the kitchen and it now overlooks a peaceful walking trail instead. It gets beautiful light and without compromising too much privacy — and it completely changed the feel of the main space.

One of the very first design decisions we made? The kitchen cabinets. We landed on a blue paired with warm wood tones — and honestly, everything else unfolded from there. That palette became the thread we pulled through the rest of the house.

The kitchen isn’t just a statement — it’s the heartbeat of the home. Clean lines, plenty of storage, and a perfect cat perch in the dining room. And thanks to perfectly-placed windows, the space is filled with natural light and a surprisingly serene view for a neighborhood lot.

Throughout the rest of the home, we kept things crisp and modern, but layered in color, texture, and plenty of personality. Think: curated art pieces, cozy lighting, and pops of pattern in just the right places. There’s a sense of calm and cohesion — but it’s never boring.

We also designed with intention: the layout flows easily for daily living, but still gives each space a defined feel. The entry feels open and welcoming. The living room is grounded and cozy. And the primary suite? A true retreat.

One of my favorite features is one you might not even notice: a discreet little cat door tucked into the wall that leads to a hidden litter box closet (see above). It’s the kind of detail that makes everyday life easier — and it’s just one example of how I designed this home around the way the clients actually live.

There’s also built-in storage where they needed it, wide-open circulation paths (cats love to zoom), and a few cozy nooks that double as sunbathing spots for the fur babies.

This project was one of those that sticks with you — not just for the design itself, but for the people behind it. Working with clients who trust the process and aren’t afraid to make bold choices makes such a difference. It allowed us to create something truly personal, where every corner feels intentional and full of character.

I loved the challenge of the lot and the subdivision restrictions and honestly, their kitchen/dining area might be a career highlight.

At the end of the day, this home feels like a true reflection of its owners: full of warmth, personality, and a whole lot of joy.

Whether you’re dreaming up a fresh start or reimagining your space to fit your life better, I’d love to help you bring it to life — with creativity, intention, and a few fun surprises along the way.
